About Us
The Team
Retrograde Labs is Joey D'Anna and Robbie Carman — career-long post-production professionals with a passion for workflow optimization.
We build tools to solve real-world problems we've encountered in our day-to-day client work.
Joey brings over 20 years of post-production experience to Retrograde Labs, beginning with linear tape-to-tape online editing before transitioning into non-linear workflows and color grading. He is an industry leading expert in HDR, Dolby Vision, and advanced color grading workflow.
Joey has been a computer expert and enthusiast since the dawn of the internet age. A long time programmer, UNIX-enthusiast, vintage computer collector, and all around computer nerd, he brings technical expertise to complex post production workflow problems.
Outside the color suite, Joey is a dedicated tinkerer and maker with a passion for classic cars, motorcycles, racing drones, and cold-war aerospace history.
Robbie brings nearly 25 years of post-production experience, having graded hundreds of programs for Discovery, National Geographic, Disney+, Amazon, PBS, and Peacock, with films screening at Tribeca, Sundance, and SXSW.
His color work spans broadcast, OTT, non-profits, and political campaigns on both sides of the aisle.
A recognized HDR and post-workflow expert trusted by Dolby and FSI, Robbie co-founded MixingLight.com, has co-authored eight books, and is an Adobe Master Trainer and Blackmagic Certified Instructor. He speaks regularly at NAB, IBC, and Adobe Max, where he's been named a Max Master five times.
Color Grading
Robbie and Joey also run DC Color — a boutique color grading and finishing facility in the Washington DC area, working with clients ranging from documentary filmmakers and political campaigns to global non-profits and major broadcast networks.
